Job Description

Join a fast growing technology company that builds innovative geological robots that scan rocks, train machine learning algorithms to analyze the data, and develop creative software that makes all results incredibly useful for finding and extracting natural resources.

We are well-funded and looking for amazing people to join their team.

Our client has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist with a propensity for computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML). As a Research Scientist, your talents will help step up the digitization of geological rock properties internationally. Enjoy working in a collaborative environment where you can engage in ambitious long-term research with many petabytes of new data, work on questions that haven’t been solved before, quickly implement and prototype new ideas, and see them in production by working in partnership with our client’s engineering team.

This is a hybrid role located in Toronto.

Generous compensation offered.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • You will be reporting directly to the Director of R&D and take part in defining the company's AI work, supervise its execution, communicating to executives and, most importantly, drive innovation!
  • Your responsibilities and duties will include:
  • Conceptualizing, designing, implementing, and validating potential CV and ML algorithmic solutions for automating geological analysis
  • Working cross-functionally with engineers, scientists, and product leaders across teams to help define and prioritize problem requirements
  • Running offline experiments and building prototypes to evaluate the algorithms
  • Understanding limitations in algorithms and data and innovate to solve these problems
  • Contributing to the design and improvement of our hardware and software platforms

Qualifications and Experience
  • Solid image recognition and processing skills
  • Solid expertise with machine learning
  • Proficiency with statistics (multivariate and spatial)
  • Expertise with data mining
  • Proficiency in numerical optimization and methods
  • Experience in GPU programming
  • Experience in the AI space
  • Expertise in numeric modelling and/or robotic vision, automation
  • Expertise designing and training novel deep learning (DL) architectures for CV with a broad understanding of DL methods and literature
  • Expertise in machine learning spanning supervised and unsupervised learning methods, and applying ML to real-world problems
  • Research experience with a successful track record of delivering quality results and/or academic publications in top CV, CG, or ML venues
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, or PyTorch
  • Strong software development experience in languages such as Python and C++
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • MSc in Computer Science or related field
  • Familiarity with trending and state-of-the-art technology in computer vision and/or machine learning.
  • You have an advanced degree in computer science or software engineering degree or similar and on-point cutting-edge research experience.
  • You are passionate about doing research on ground-breaking computer vision and deep learning problems.
  • You are excited to work with huge new multi-sensor data sets to solve hugely valuable problems for the resource sector.
  • You are enthusiastic and hard working and looking to be part of a fun team building something useful and meaningful.
  • You are a good communicator and work well with others.
  • You are diligent and self-motivated and can get stuff done as part of a remote-work team.
  • You're excited to work at a company building robots with lasers that shoot rocks and meaningfully applying AI technologies to solve real-world challenges, and thankful you won't be working on some soul-crushingly boring project data mining some accounting database or on some creepy clickbait AdTech project.
Nice to have:

  • Bonus points for:
  • Computational geometry, computer graphics, GPU programming
  • Advanced numerical methods and computational algorithms
  • Spatial statistical analysis and modeling, statistical simulation
  • Knowledge of geological principles and geoscientific sensor (XRF, XRD, hyperspectral, LIBS) data analysis
