Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and issue bi-weekly payroll
  • Verify that all changes affecting staff payroll (increments, new-hires, terminations, changes in employee information, After Hours Staff) are collected, reconciled and input into payroll system
  • Prepare monthly payroll reconciliation
  • Summarize and issue annual T4s
  • Prepare annual reconciliation of EHT
  • Prepare and file annual OMERS Form 119
  • Prepare any journal entries derived from above processes
  • Reconcile all statutory and source deduction general ledger accounts prior to issuance of remittance payments
  • Issue remittance payments for statutory and other source deductions
  • Maintaining accurate journals, ledgers and books of account, including the preparation of general journal entries
  • Preparation and reconciliation of G/L accounts
  • Processing month-end journal entries;
  • Financial analysis various accounts as part of cost containment
  • Process/procedure improvement
  • assist with preparation and coordination of the audit process
  • assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures
  • assist with year-end closings
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Finance Coordinator/Director of Finance
  • Such as but not limited to:
  • VISA analysis and payment (monthly)
  • Full cycle Accounts Receivable including preparation of monthly invoices and maintaining customer records


Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum College Diploma in Accounting or Finance / or recognized Accounting certification
  • Able to understand and work within guidelines set by Canada Revenue Agency, Employment Standards Act, Pension Benefits Act, and collective agreement
  • Possess strong skills and knowledge of payroll, pension and accounting
  • Work in a fast paced/changing environment
  • Three to five years relevant payroll experience with a mid-size employer
  • Ability to work well in a team / cross team atmosphere
  • Ability to identify systemic barriers to equity and anti-oppressive practices and apply this lens to the work
  • Knowledge, experience, and understanding of the culture, history and current issues/oppression experienced by First Nations, Inuit and Métis; those of African Canadian/Black heritage; and other racially marginalized persons in our community
  • Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis history, people and communities and a demonstrated ability to engage with the communities
  • Sound knowledge of automated accounting systems and Microsoft office
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
  • Critical and solutions-oriented thinking
  • Experience with process design and implementation
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation considered an asset
  • Proficiency in Avanti People Management and Oracle Enterprise software considered an asset
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel considered an asset (specifically Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, Nested IF/AND/OR formulas)
  • Bilingualism an asset

Education and Certifications

Minimum education required: University Degree or College Diploma
