Job Description

Our client in the Real Estate industry is looking for a Controller to join their team on a permanent basis. This role will focus on the land development and construction side of the business. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller is responsible for a specific portfolio of companies with the following responsibilities:

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Review year-end audit working papers and liaise with external auditors as required for Construction and Development entities.
  • Manage bank accounts, cash flows, and pursue strategies to minimize interest including booking BA’s as necessary.
  • Verify GL coding for construction and development costs for accuracy prior to submitting to Management for signature.
  • Review monthly bank reconciliations and HST filings for Construction and Development companies.
  • Correspond with the CRA to respond to audits.
  • Work with external counsel and accountants to execute joint venture agreements, partnership agreements and various corporate structures to mitigate risks surrounding HST, tax planning strategies and land transfer tax minimization.
  • Prepare draws and margin reports for lenders for Construction and Development Projects.
  • Complete financing packages to obtain Construction, Land Development and Mortgage loans.
  • Complete budget reviews for Construction and Land Development Projects.
  • Arrange Letters of Credits and Guarantees and insurance for Construction and Development projects as necessary.
  • Prepare unaudited financial statements for internal and external users.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports and analysis and perform other related duties as assigned by Management.


Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years working in a real estate development company or with a CA firm specializing in real estate.
  • CPA, CA, CMA or CGA designation is required.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Experience with Yardi is an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
