Job Description

Our unionized client is seeking an HR Officer for a 1 year contract with strong potential to stay on. This role offers remote work, a flexible base salary, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, 4 weeks vacation' and 6% in lieu of benefits that kicks in right away.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Review and revamp HR policies, procedures and programs as they relate to the organization and employment related legislation (ESA, OHSA, Human Rights, etc)
  • Handle confidential employee documentation, including salaries, benefits, attendance, pension plan contributions, RRSP contributions, etc
  • Process bi-weekly payroll and handle benefits adjustments
  • Perform benefits calculations, reconciliations and remittances (biweekly, monthly, annually)
  • Conduct training sessions for legislative compliance and safe work practices
  • Conduct monthly workplace safety inspections, providing ergonomic setup for workstations
  • Attendance management using the online AMS and ensuring everyone's attendance records are recorded
  • Training employees on how to use the attendance platform, as well as how to use timesheets
  • Manage the administration of HR software platforms
  • Disability management for employee on or returning from leaves of absences, including creating/managing Return to Work accommodation plans
  • Full cycle recruitment including: discussions on hiring needs, creating job descriptions, internal/external job postings, screening applications, partnering with staffing agencies, creating interview questions, coordinating and participating in interviews, conducting reference checks, and making recommendations on compensation package for new hires
  • Onboarding/ offboarding, including orientation and coordinating setups for all new employees, issuing and monitoring building access cards for employees, coordinating office set up for new employees and other related tasks for terminated / exiting employees
  • General employee relations and answering questions about the collective agreements (there is just one union)
  • Work closely with different business units to analyze their document retention requirements, recommend filing options, and develop document retention policies/schedule based on their needs
  • Develop a scan and storage policy for all business units, maintaining document retention schedules for paper, electronic and off-site storage
  • Ensure the HR data is up to date for audits

Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum 5-7 years of related experience
  • Diploma/Degree in Human Resources or related field
  • Previous experience processing payroll
  • Strong knowledge of the ESA, Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code, OHSA and collective agreement administration
  • Working knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, as well as Pay Equity Act
  • Unionized environment experience and demonstrated experience with employee relations, negotiations and contract management
  • Ability to research relevant laws and apply to cases
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario and Canadian legislative processes, labour relations, collective bargaining, and the role of the broader public sector
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Nice to have:

  • CHRP/CHRL designation considered an asset
  • Knowledge of records retention processes preferred

Education and Certifications

Minimum education required: College Diploma
